DFKI Research Group for Multiagent Systems: Research Team I2S

Intelligent Information Systems

Aims & Scope

The research team I2S performs application-oriented research on intelligent information systems for the future Internet with applications in various domains. Major research areas of the team are

  • Semantic Technologies
  • Service-Oriented Computing
  • Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems

for the Internet of Services, the Internet of Things and the 3D-Internet. These variants of the Internet are expected to converge in the future Internet.

Intelligent information systems exploit in particular methods of Artificial Intelligence in order to intelligently maintain, coordinate and provide relevant content and services to the user in various network, user and application contexts. In particular, intelligent information agents as part of such intelligent systems can proactively discover, select and compose potentially heterogeneous, distributed content or services either individually or in joint cooperation with other intelligent agents. In case of contested or chargeable data and services, the agents may have to enter automated rational negotiations in order to resolve the conflicting goals with maximized individual or social welfare of the respective multi-agent system. In case of pervasive (ubiquitous) information systems and environments, the utilization of scalable, privacy-preserving and context-aware means for semantic data and service coordination is of particular importance.

Example application sectors for intelligent information systems in the future Internet include E-Business, E-Health (AAL), Smart Energy, Smart Cities, Intelligent Virtual 3D Worlds, Intelligent (Machine) Condition Monitoring, E-Government.
